Is there another word for chunk? I did a thesaurus-y type search but didn’t come up with anything I liked. “Piece” doesn’t describe the size like “chunk” does. Morsel sounds too…mushroomy, or small? Blob or glob sounds too blobby and globby.

My family has a trope: “That’s not for little kids.” I think it’s from a time when a close childhood friend’s evil stepfather had made her watch Full Metal Jacket, as though it would teach an 11-year-old rural Midwestern child anything but how to have nightmares.
My dad says it now almost exclusively about things he’s surprised I’m interested in, since I’m … a little kid, get it? Dad humorz? The last thing we said it about was coffee.

“Oh, bullshit. This isn’t one of those stories, Avice. One moment of cack-handedness, Captain Cook offends the bloody locals, one slip of the tongue or misuse of sacred cutlery, and bang, he’s on the grill. Do you ever think about how self-aggrandising that stuff is? Oh, all those stories pretending to be mea culpas about cultural insensitivity, oops, we said the wrong thing, but they’re really all about how ridiculous natives overreact. Avice, we must have made thousands of fuckups like that over the years. Think about it. Just like our visitors did when they first met our lot, on Terre. And for the most part we didn’t lose our shit, did we?”
